Amani Garden – Peace Garden

Founded in 2008, the Amani Garden is about 0.5 hectares in size. “Amani” is the Swahili word for “peace”.

This demonstration garden was created in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Kitale – in Bidii – to inspire the surrounding villages and communities with perspectives and to introduce them to community-based approaches to sustainable development.

Garden and greenhouse

Vegetables, fruits, herbs and trees are planted in the garden and greenhouse, such as bananas, cabbage, tomatoes, potatoes, cilantro and aloe vera.

Building

There is a building on the property that is used for workshops and as a meeting place for the youth group. In addition, a library with permaculture literature is undermined. Our team member Ben lives in this house.

Clean and renewable funded drinking water

The borehole of the groundwater pumping system is 72 m deep. The water pump is powered by photovoltaic modules.

The pumped water is stored in tanks and is thus available even in cloudy weather and at night. It is used to irrigate the garden. Furthermore, the water kiosk provides clean drinking water free of charge to people living in the surrounding villages. The system can supply around 3,000 people with drinking water every day.

Biogas

In Amani garden there are two small biogas plants. The generated gas is used for cooking.

Mushrooms

The hut in Amani garden is used for mushroom cultivation. In the photos you can see a new brood being prepared and then placed into the hut.

Solar cooker

One solar cooker for cooking and baking is in use.

Up- und Recycling

Old plastic bottles and plastic bags get a second life. Salad and vegetables thrive very well.
